Cazal is named after its founder, Cari Zalloni (1937–2012): born in Athens, raised in Austria, and an eyewear designer in Germany from 1960. In 1975 he launched his own label with a deliberately small start: five models, and music as the way to carry them.
Where others pared eyewear back, Zalloni went the other way: sculpted shapes, deep 10mm acetate and 24-carat gold details. Every step of production still happens in Germany, and the designs that made Cazal famous are still being made today.

The 1980s
The Look of Hip Hop
In the 1980s Cazal became a cult label and helped define the hip hop look. When Run-DMC’s Darryl McDaniels wore the 607, fans across America followed, and Cazals became a fixture of music videos and films.
Fans still call them “Cazzies”, and Munich’s Pinakothek der Moderne has devoted an exhibition to the brand and its influence on American hip hop.
