Jim Jannard founded Oakley in 1975, selling motorcycle handlebar grips out of his car at motocross events. The grip material he developed is still used today for the earsocks and nose pieces on Oakley frames, so they hold more firmly as you sweat.

In 1984 came the first sunglasses, the Factory Pilot Eyeshades, built for sport. A year later the Frogskins took the brand off the track and into everyday style. Oakley has been part of Luxottica since 2007 and is still based in Foothill Ranch, California.

    Lens tints tuned colour by colour to boost contrast where the eye is most sensitive to detail, with versions tuned for activities such as golf and snow.

    Plutonite

    Oakley’s optical-grade polycarbonate lens material: impact resistant, and filters 100% of UVA, UVB and UVC.

  • 03

    O Matter

    A lightweight, flexible frame material used on optical styles such as the Port Bow.

    Grip

    The original handlebar-grip material, still used on earsocks and nose pads so frames stay put when you sweat.
